Circa 1910.
Size 1.36m long x 84cm high.
The Strang and Co department store that formerly stood on the corner of High and Lichfield St in Christchurch is shown in this exceptionally artistic enamel sign.
Strange and Company was New Zealand's largest department store by the turn of the century.
The fire department was called to a fire on February 6, 1908, at a structure close to the Strange and Company shop. It had been purchased by Stang and Co so that furnishings could be shown.
Time was lost due to the lack of a high pressure water supply and the rapid depletion of the fire tanks. Thankfully, no one perished in this massive fire.
A very rare and detailed enamel sign, this do not come on the market often.
